There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not allowed. Eight casinos are established in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel compound that features numerous luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
